About the Groom and Bride…

Cheyaanthan Haran

Chey, originally from Jaffna in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province, was born in Colombo. His father hails from Neervali, while his mother is from Kuplan and studied at Uduvil Girls’ College before beginning her career as a teacher, first in Nedunkerney and later in Vavuniya. During the civil war, there were repeated strikes in Jaffna, and often his parents, cradling him, would flee for cover. These years were particularly challenging. Their beloved family home was bombed, and his mother continued her work in education amid widespread instability, at a time when even schools were targeted.

In pursuit of furthering his career, his father moved the entire family to New Delhi to complete a Master’s degree. They later migrated to Auckland and then to Christchurch, New Zealand, where his father undertook a PhD in Engineering and his mother completed her degree at the University of Canterbury.

It was in Christchurch that Chey completed his primary schooling. He went on to attend Wellington College before moving to Auckland to pursue his medical degree. Now based in Sydney, Chey seeks to balance his vascular surgical training with an appreciation for Australia’s beautiful coastlines and natural landscapes.

Hayley Ryan

Hayley, from a rich Irish and Aotearoa heritage, was born in New Zealand’s Hutt Valley. Her paternal grandfather migrated from Ireland in the 1950s, while her maternal grandfather served Aotearoa in the Māori Battalion. She proudly claims a 2% Sri Lankan contribution to her DNA. Raised in Upper Hutt, Hayley attended Sacred Heart College before completing her nursing degree in Wellington. She currently works at St Vincent’s Hospital as a Heart and Lung Transplant Nurse, where she has perhaps enjoyed her work a little too much. To Chey’s reassurance, she will be moving to Melbourne to take up a Clinical Nurse Consultant role at the Alfred Hospital. Hayley, too, has embarked on encompassing the Australian pristine coastlines and scenic landscapes, whether it’s for jetting between states for organ retrievals or for leisure.

We hope you’ll join us on this special day.
